According to a 2017 study conducted by The Sentencing Project, 121,718 people were incarcerated in private, for-profit prisons in the United States which remains the world leader in incarcerating the largest number of its citizens. Although the fact that many minority communites are incarcerated per-capita is starkly larger numbers is becoming widely known, what remains hidden from the public is that 37 of 50 states have allowed the private contracting of labor in prisons. Large corporate giants such as IBM, Macy's, Dell, Boeing, and others benefit economically from mass incarceration. There is a direct correlation to the loss of freedom and the bottom line.
